A day on safari

We often get asked what a typical day on safari at a luxury lodge entails. If you’ve never had the privilege of experiencing one first hand, we hope this post of ours helps you to get an idea.

While no two days are the same, and every destination, lodge and guide give their own feel and ‘flavour’, there is a general format that you can come to expect. Let us paint a picture for you. Allow your imagination to run wild…

A day on safari borana view

Early wake-up call:

As the old adage goes ‘the early bird catches the worm’. In the safari world this couldn’t be truer. The animals are most active during the cooler hours of the day, so an early wake-up is in order to maximise your chances of seeing some action. You’ll usually be woken up around 5 o’clock with a nice cup of coffee.

Morning activity:

Up at the main deck, just as the first rays of sunlight are just starting to climb over the horizon, your guide will greet you and explain what the plan is for the morning activity (a general itinerary for your stay will typically be discussed upon your arrival at the lodge).

Depending on where you are in Africa, your morning activity will vary in length. In some countries, particularly in East Africa, you will often be out all morning, stopping off for a bite to eat. In Southern Africa it will often last around 4 hours before you head back to camp.

If you’re lucky, you might stop off for some light breakfast in the bush with a nice slug of Amarula in a coffee to round off the morning.

Examples of morning activities:

  • Game drive
  • Bush walk/big game walk
  • Boating or mokoro safari
  • Horseback safari
  • Hot air balloon safari or helicopter
  • Quad biking
  • Cultural experience
A day on safari drinks stop

Morning bush walk:

On the way back from your morning activity we recommend trying to get in a bush walk. It’s a great way to stretch your legs and really earn your breakfast. It’s also provides a fantastic opportunity to see the wild from a different perspective. Make sure to let your guide know that you are interested in a walk when you arrive.

Breakfast:

If you didn’t eat out in the bush, breakfast back at camp is usually quite a hearty affair. A Full English while watching elephants drinking from the water hole in front of camp is surely everyone’s dream (or maybe just ours).

A day on safari elephants in water

Mid-morning/Lunch:

This is a great time to relax by the pool while reading a book and sipping a cocktail. You’re on holiday, it’s 12 o’clock somewhere!

From here you can roll back to deck for a light lunch before returning to lounge in the shade avoiding the African heat. This is the hottest time of the day and when the majority of the animals will be doing exactly the same. As Noel Coward once sang, ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’.

For those of you that can nap, a post lunch siesta is highly recommended. If not, enjoy a massage to pass the time.

Afternoon tea and game drive:

After a quick coffee to revive you from your day of indulgence, it’s time to head out into the bush again. Your afternoon game drive will often include a delightful pause for a sundowner. Don’t be afraid to tell your guide if you’d rather keep going in search of animals, or stick with the ones your watching.

My favourite trick if I’m very thirsty is to ask the guide to place the cooler box in reaching distance so you can sip your G&T while watching a leopard patrol its territory.

A day on safari sundowner

Dinner:

Once you arrive back into camp it will likely be dark. As such, you will be escorted back to your room by a security guard (please don’t be tempted to walk alone while it’s dark). Time to quickly freshen up before dinner.

Dinners on safari tend to be a jolly communal affair where you can regale the stories of your day. By the time dessert has been cleared away you’ll be ready for bed and pleasantly surprised it’s only about 9.30. Get some well earned rest, it all begins again tomorrow when the sun comes up.

If you’re lucky you might be treated to a ‘Bush Dinner’. This is where you eat out in the bush in a specially prepared area. This is a truly awe-inspiring experience as you can hear and feel everything that’s going on around you.

A day on safari bushdinner

So there you have it – a typical day on safari. We hope that this has given you a slightly better understanding of what it’s like on one of our trips.

Kenya Mara Riding Safari (7 nights)

With outstanding game viewing from horseback and superb riding country, this fantastic Mara Riding Safari itinerary will exceed all expectations. Operated by our partners ‘Offbeat Safaris’, who are well know to be the best in the business and boast 30 years of experience, this riding safari will give you a completely different perspective on African wildlife.

This week long safari offers the pure bush experience. With 4 different camp locations you will literally ride from one side of the Masai Mara to the other, covering over 250km.

Please note that you must be an experienced horse rider to book this itinerary

Day 1 – Olare Lamun

You will either be collected at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or if you have arrived earlier from your Nairobi Hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport for your flight at 10:00 am to Naboisho. It is a beautiful flight passing over the fertile Kikuyu Highlands before reaching the Great Rift Valley. You will fly across the volcano studded floor of the Rift before reaching the Loita Hills and Naboisho Air strip. You will be met by your guide and there will be an hour’s drive to camp. We reach our camp in a grove of acacia trees by a small stream at the southern edge of the Loita Plains at Olare Lamun (the rhino salt lick) Lunch will be served and you will have a little time to relax before meeting your horses and setting off on your first gentle evening ride.

Kenya Riding Safari 2

Day 2 – Olare Lamun

After an early morning ride we will come back to camp for a light breakfast and then set out for a game drive and walk up a hill nearby called Oloiburmut returning to camp for a brunch/lunch. There will be time for a siesta and at around 4pm we will drive up the hill to visit the local Masai Village.

Day 3 – Olare Orok

Our first moving day and we break camp in good time as it is the longest ride of the trip covering nearly 50kms. We will meet the vehicles to break the ride with a picnic breakfast and lunch along the way. Riding across the rolling open plains the game generally becomes more plentiful as we approach the Mara ecosystem. We should see herds of zebra, topi, giraffe, wildebeest, gazelle and there is a good chance of seeing elephant and buffalo as well. We reach our camp on the edge of the Masai Mara Game Reserve on the Olare Orok lugga late afternoon. From camp we are likely to hear lion and hyena at night and the abundance of game is apparent everywhere.

Kenya Riding Safari 7

Day 4 – Olare Orok

A full day of morning and evening rides from camp with the option of driving into the game park for some good photographic opportunities. From the landrovers we can get much closer to lion, elephant and buffalo than we are able to do from the horses.

Day 5 – Escarpment

Our second moving day; we head west across the Mara plains and reach the Mara River on the Park boundary. We hopefully ford the river (unless in complete flood) at one of the famous wildebeest crossings and then head south-west across the Mara Triangle where we have our picnic lunch before ascending the Soit Olololol Escarpment to reach our camp in a forest glade overlooking the whole Mara ecosystem.

Kenya Riding Safari 5

Day 6 – Mara River

Today we will descend the escarpment again and ride through the Triangle once more to the same wildebeest crossing on the river. We head in a North Westerly direction and after a picnic lunch we find our final campsite set up on the banks of the Mara River. Close by there are some hippo pools and their grunting at night is a special feature of this camp.

Day 7 – Mara River

With a full day camped on the river we will follow the same morning and evening ride routine and often take the opportunity to cross the river close to the hippo which is an exhilarating a highlight. A walk or drive will be on offer after breakfast; providing another good opportunity to take photographs.

Kenya Riding Safari 6

Day 8

We will have a final early morning ride before breakfast and after saying goodbye to your horses we will drive to the airstrip to meet your flight back to Nairobi at around 11am in time to do some shopping in town and relax before your evening flight or in good time to reach your onward destination.

Tanzania: Southern Explorer (12 nights)

This 10 night sample itinerary combines Tanzania’s wild and untamed Southern Circuit with several days unwinding on the white sandy beaches of Zanzibar. It’s a great option for the more adventurous travellers wanting to get ‘off-the-beaten-track’.

This fantastic itinerary begins with 4 nights in Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park before travelling East to the vast Selous Game Reserve. The final 5 days of this unforgettable trip are spent on a secluded beach in Zanzibar.

We prefer to use smaller camps and lodges that have the ability to provide an intimate experience.

Please note: All of our online itineraries are examples. We will design a bespoke itinerary based on your preferences

Day 1 to 4: Ruaha National Park

Despite being the largest national park in Tanzania, Ruaha attracts surprisingly few visitors. Perched on the edge of the Ikuka Escarpment with breath-taking views over the savannah below, your home for the next three nights is the stunning and exclusive Ikuka Safari Lodge.

Jumping out of the light aircraft at Msembe Airstrip you’re first game drive is about to begin! Meandering through the bush on your way to camp, keep your eyes peeled for elephant, cheetah and giraffe. You’ll be welcomed into camp just after 5pm with a cocktail and quick tour around the small and intimate camp. With only 6 expansive tents, exquisite food and stunning views, Ikuka is one of our favourite camps in the Ruaha. Time for a quick freshen up before settling down for dinner.

Walking up early the next morning, you’ll head out into the bush on foot with one of the highly experienced guides tracking rhino and other big game. Stop off in a clearing for a cup of freshly made coffee and a light breakfast. No, you’re not dreaming – this is Africa!

Southern Explorer Ikuka

Day 4 to 8: Selous Game Reserve

After four incredible days exploring the Ruaha, it’s time to make your way east to the immense Selous Game Reserve. Shadowed by trees on the banks of the Rufiji River, your base for the next few days is the luxurious Sand Rivers Selous. With it’s airy thatched main lounge area and open fronted rooms, you’ll feel like a true adventurer!

Your next few days will be spend boating up the Steiglers Gorge, heading out on walking safaris and out on game drives. For something extra special, extend a walking safari with some overnight fly-camping in the wild!

You’ll be amazed how quiet the Selous is! Sometimes you won’t see anyone for an entire day.

Southern Explorer sand rivers

Day 9 to 13: Zanzibar

After 7 nights in the bush exploring the wilderness of Africa, it’s time to fly up to Zanzibar for 4 nights of blissful relaxation. You’ll be staying at the fantastic Matemwe Retreat in the quieter eastern Matemwe region of the island.

Matemwe probably the best diving and snorkelling on the island, plus some excellent kite-surfing, sailing and reef-walking. If you’re craving some civilization after your time in the bush, day trips to Stone Town can be arranged. Otherwise, kick-back and enjoy the last few days of your holiday of a lifetime relaxing in the sun with a book in hand!

Going to Southeast Asia for the first time and casting that spectrum of flavors – that certainly changed my whole palate, the kind of foods I crave. A lot of dishes I used to know became boring to me.

Trips to Balearic Islands

No, no, this is not a dream … Welcome to the Balearic Islands! Imposing in the Mediterranean, the Gimnesias and the Pitiusas rise up as the paradise to which one always wishes to return. Because the Balearic Islands are coves as recondite as that of Deià, where your only companions will be the waves that hug the sand. They are those paradisiacal corners of Saona or Espalmador and those turquoise waters of Menorca.

We can also prepare your trip to Spain fron any part of the world

The Balearic Islands are those narrow and cobbled streets of Valldemossa guarded by the mountains that are erected in the Tramuntana. Because tourism in the Balearic Islands is the Favàritx Lighthouse and its loneliness is hit by the waves and it is those beaches that overflow with people in summer and peace and tranquility in winter.

“Did you know that Illetes beach, in Formentera, has been chosen as the best in Spain, second in Europe and sixth in the world?” Cálzate las menorquinas, take an ensaimada for the road and patéate the streets of the Balearic archipelago discovering the Cathedral of Mallorca, the old town of Alcudia and feeling the king of the world in the Cape of Formentor.

Because the Balearic Islands are those blue summers of bicycle and beach where the sun rises earlier than in any other point of Spain.
